You’ve decided that a ControlByWeb cell unit is the perfect fit for your application. Now how do you go from making the purchase, to setting up your device in the field?
First, select the cellular version of the device you’d like to purchase. The cell model always has “CW” near the end of the part number, like X-410CW-I for example.
Once you’ve selected the cellular version, the data plans will appear below the drop-down:
- The 5 MB plan is ideal for internet/network failover applications.
- The 10 MB plan is perfect for most use cases with a few end points, and is the one we typically recommend.
- The 30 MB plan is great for monitoring many end points and consistent logging.
Select the appropriate cell plan and click “Add to Cart”. Finish the checkout process and your cellular ControByWeb device will now be on the way to you!
In the order confirmation email you receive, you will see a data plan token. Keep this, as you will need it for later. This token is tied to a ControlByWeb Cloud seat, making the process of connecting to the Cloud even easier.
When you receive your device, DO NOT POWER IT ON. The first time a cell device powers on it will activate the cellular connection and try to automatically find and connect to a cloud account. You’ll first need to activate the internal SIM card.

To activate cell devices and add them to a ControlByWeb cloud account.
- Log into your cloud account at ControlByWeb.cloud (If you don’t have one, you can create one here)
- Click on Devices in the left-hand panel.
- Click the New Device + button in the top-right corner of the device table.
- On the New Device page, you have two tabs: Device or Cell Device.
- Ensure the “Cell Device” tab is selected.
- Enter a device name. Enter the Serial Number and Cell ID found on the side of your ControlByWeb cellular device.
- Click Submit. This will redirect you to the Device Edit page.
- On the Device Edit page, enter the data plan code found in the order confirmation email from earlier and click Apply Data Plan Code.
- Click Check SIM Status or refer to the Summary page to verify activation status.
- Once activated, power on the cell device. It will connect to your cloud account automatically.
If you have already powered on your device before activating the SIM card, you can follow these steps:
- Access the device at the assigned IP address, the default is 192.168.1.2, /setup.html and click the General Settings Tab
- Click Advanced Network.
- Click yes in the “Remote Services” box if it isn’t already.
- In the “Certificate Request Method” drop-down box, select “Cloud Username/Password”.
- In the available fields, enter the username and password of your ControlByWeb Cloud Account
- Click the blue “Submit” button at the bottom of the page
With that, your device should appear in the device list in the ControlByWeb Cloud, and cellular activity should be working as intended. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to our tech support team at [email protected] or call 435-750-5999 and select option 3.
